Master craftsman bonus as expression of appreciation of vocational education and training system

On 1 September 2013, the master craftsman bonus promoted by Bavaria's Minister for Economic Affairs, Martin Zeil, has come into effect. Each successful graduate of the vocational continuing education course resulting in the qualification of master craftsman or an equivalent qualification now receives a master craftsman bonus to the amount of 1,000 Euro.

"The master craftsman bonus is a symbol of a decisive step forwards in the field of vocational education and training. After the introduction of the university entrance qualification for master craftsmen and equivalent qualifications, this government benefit is a consequence that is both necessary and logical. For me personally, the master craftsman bonus, for which I have fought in the context of the abolition of university tuition fees, is also an expression of our appreciation of the vocational education and training system," explained the minister. "For a career does not start with academic degrees, as so many people mistakenly assume."

The Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs pointed out that professional qualifications constitute the pivotal element of well-paid employment and a high degree of job security. "People who are excellently trained can contribute a first rate performance in a high-class job. This is how we open up diversified opportunities for a vast number of people. I will consequently continue to pursue this concept for safeguarding our future", said Zeil.

He furthermore indicated that innovation and technological progress alone are not enough to stand the test of global competition in the long term. Zeil: "A decisive factor is also the application and dissemination of innovative technologies to the most comprehensive degree possible – in all businesses. We therefore need also women and men at the work station, who are able to control and monitor modern technologies and processes in a competent, reliable and profitable manner. This is why, for me, vocational education and training has the highest priority in the Bavarian economic policy."
