German schools in Equador, China and the Philippines won the competition "Students build bridges worldwide" for their work in the fields of dual vocational training, environmental protection and social responsibility.
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, patron of the competition, and Hans Heinrich Driftmann, president of the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce, presented the prizes worth 80,000 euros. The overall winner was the vocational training centre of the German School Quito. It developed several school projects for high-quality dual vocational training.
11th-grade students of the German School Quito can enrol for the additional subject "economy" and complete an internship at the end of that school year in Germany. They are offered a dual vocational training in the commercial sector with a job certificate according to German standards plus the Ecuadorean title of "Tecnologo". Thus, they are entitled to shorter studies at several prestigious Ecudorean universities and at the University of Applied Science in Worms (Germany).
The vocational training centre in Quito was founded 20 years ago and has become the prototype of a nationwide vocational training system. In the national evaluation of all training facilities, the school has achieved excellent results and become a role model for Ecuadoream training facilities. It is well-known for the quality of its training in three languages (German, Spanish, English) and for its social activities. The German School Quito also was the first German school in South America to sign a cooperation treaty with nine prestigious German technical universities.
