The Travel India 2016 conference, held in Kolkata, has idenified the Skill India campaign as a driver of growth of the travel, tourism and hospitality sector. The two day conference and exposition on travel and tourism in India was organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) with an aim to introspect the implications of new set of policies adopted by Ministry of Tourism.

"Servicing the sector with skilled manpower effectively is a pre-requisite for the actualization of tourism specific expectations. This is both an imperative and a challenge," said Anup K Chatterji, general manager – human resources development, India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).

Addressing a gathering of government dignitaries, industry captains and international business delegations from China and Bangladesh, Chatterji put emphasis on the need to meet the demand of skilled and trained manpower and to bridge the current skill gap in the hospitality sector.

According to a World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) report, tourism industry has the potential to be the single largest provider of employment where nearly one out of every 11 jobs in the world is supported by this industry. Currently travel and tourism, being employment intensive, provides employment to approximately 31 million people across India and is one of the largest employers in the country; this number is expected to rise to over 40 million by 2019 and over 43 million by 2022.

Speaking on the increasing demand for skilled manpower in the sector, Chatterji talked about ITDC’s effort to provide hospitality education to students as well as certifying and upgrading skills of existing service providers.

"Ashok Institute of Hospitality & Tourism Management (AIHTM) aims to work towards making a difference to the academic culture for the students by offering a globally competitive curriculum and infrastructure. Looking at the future requirement, AIHTM is focusing more on job-oriented short term and long term courses, with a recently launched three year degree course in hospitality and hotel administration in affiliation with the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT)," he added.
