Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Wednesday said that there is an urgent need to massively increase our skill provision capabilities and the 12th five-year plan focuses on skill development to meet the requirements.
"We have to massively increase our skill provision capabilities, and the 12th five-year plan is trying to do it. In my view, the maximum use of the private sector involvement in imparting skill training is what we should do," said Ahluwalia at an event on 'Leveraging Employment Generation in the 12th Five Year Plan' organised by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) and Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR).
"Past experience does not suggest that multiplying ITI's are going to achieve results. We need to encourage public private partnership for skill development and employment generation. We also need to look at why Indian manufacturing is not doing well. We need to do some hard thinking," said Ahliwalia. "Enough number of people are not skilled in India and there is a need to increase skill development," he added.
However, IMAR Director General Santosh Mehrotra said there are challenges in the 12th five-year plan to create jobs, and the objective to skill 500 million people as per the National Skill Development Programme, seems difficult.
