Move for new university to focus solely on vocational education

Maharashtra is likely to have a dedicated university for the vocational education soon. Minister for Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope Tuesday said a proposal to this effect would be tabled in the state cabinet shortly, based on the recommendations of a special panel set up to promote vocational education.

"Vocational education is the need of the hour and a dedicated university for the same would ensure its effective dissemination," he said, adding that traditional state universities should also encourage vocational courses to create a skilled workforce.

A two-day conclave 'Skillcon India 2013', the first-of-its-kind conference aimed at enhancing skill education and training in India, organized by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) in association with State Department of Higher and Technical Education and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) among others, was inaugurated by Tope.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister stressed promoting diploma and ITI courses to rectify the 'skewed ratio' between degree and diploma holders and ITI completed workforce.

"Ideally, the ratio (degree, diploma and ITI) should be 1:3:7, however we have a 1:1:1 ratio. There is need to give more dignity to diploma ITI courses to correct the ratio," he said.

Tope also elaborated the need for taking measures like proper curriculum design, effective training and creating master trainers to create ready-to-use workforce.

Academician Arun Nigavekar, founder president of Symbiosis SB Mujumdar, MCCIA president S K Jain and several industrialists, corporate heads and academic delegates attended the first day of the 'Skillcon India 2013' conclave.

Tope said an unique 'earn and learn' scheme has been launched through some polytechnics and Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in Maharashtra to support students pursing skill-based vocational and technical education.
